Commercial & Operations Manager

Are you an experienced and dynamic commercial management professional, seeking a new challenge in a unique location? Look no further! We are recruiting for a talented Commercial & Operations Manager to join our team and support the growth & development of Shrewsbury Prison.

As the Commercial & Operations Manager, your role is to lead the delivery of plans to grow visitor revenue, through admissions and secondary spend within retail and catering, ensuring customer service standards, cleanliness, presentation standards and income targets are met.You will also be responsible for duty management (shift management) of Shrewsbury Prison on a rota basis, playing a crucial role in maintaining flawless operations and delivering exceptional visitor experiences. Your duties encompass overseeing daily operations, staff management, and upholding the utmost service standards.

The role is annualised at 2,080 hours per annum (this includes 87 hours for paid lunch breaks of 20 minutes per day), with a competitive salary ranging from £27,000-£29,000 dependent on your experience.

With an annualised contract the amount of hours you work each month may vary, however your salary will be paid in 12 equal instalments over the year. The amount of hours you work each week will depend on operational demand and time of the year.

Key Responsibilities

Achieve Organisational Objectives:

  • Contributing to the company’s overall customer service, visitor experience and secondary spend goals and objectives
  • Developing a deep understanding of all commercial products and services offered at Shrewsbury Prison

Leadership:

  • Organising staff shifts, create schedules, and ensure smooth operations during service hours
  • Leading by example, inspiring and motivating the visitor centre, restaurant and cleaning teams to perform at their best
  • Recruiting, training, and supervising staff, fostering their growth and ensuring a cohesive team

Customer Interaction:

  • Leading the way in delivering first class customer service and engagement through training and on the job coaching
  • Delivering exceptional customer service by overseeing staff interactions and resolving customer issues promptly

Product Development:

  • Developing new retail product lines, point of sale and visual merchandising
  • Menu setting, monitoring sales and presentation of food
  • Liaising with suppliers, maintaining positive relationships and managing inventory orders effectively

Compliance:

  • Ensure compliance with company policies regarding health & safety, risk assessments, cash handling, equipment usage, and property maintenance
  • Enforce strict adherence to all food safety procedures as per sanitary regulations and company standards
  • Oversee and ensure the kitchen is cleaned and maintained in accordance with regulatory guidelines
  • Maintain safe working conditions for all staff and uphold safety protocols at all times
  • Achieve 5* Food Hygiene upon inspection

Inventory Management:

  • Regularly audit inventory levels, order products as needed, and monitor stock to ensure product availability

Financial Objectives:

  • Collaborate with management to meet revenue targets, implement strategies to improve sales, maintain GP % margins, cost control and address adverse trends effectively

General:

Knowledge, Skills & Desired Experience

  • An appropriate level of experience managing a commercial operation, preferably within a visitor attraction, heritage or leisure environment
  • Demonstrable record of leading high performing teams including performance management, team building and coaching with a focus on delivering excellent service
  • Demonstrable experience of high levels of customer care
  • An understanding of compliance requirements relating to a visitor attraction (GDPR, health & safety, food safety, licensing, safeguarding, risk assessments, fire etc).
  • Strong people skills, enabling good working relationships with those in the team
  • Excellent influencing and negotiating skills, including diplomacy, advocacy and persuasion
  • The ability to communicate effectively and confidently with diverse groups of people of varying ages, abilities and experience
  • Effective planning and prioritisation skills, with evidence of determination and creativity in setting a direction and getting others to follow
  • The ability to work autonomously and have good decision-making skills
  • Excellent IT skills including Microsoft Office, EPOS systems, digital ticketing systems and e-commerce systems
  • Willingness to work flexibly as required, including evenings, weekends and bank holidays
  • Level 3 Food Hygiene certification
  • Previously working in tourism and/or heritage environment (minimum 2 years’ experience)
  • Experience in people management and development (minimum 2 years’ experience)
  • Budget management (minimum 2 years’ experience)

Cleaner

We have an exciting new vacancy for a Cleaner at Shrewsbury Prison!

From contributing to customer experience, to maintaining the upkeep of the staff offices to support productivity, this varied role is vital to maintaining the cleanliness and hygiene standards of the site.

The role is annualised at 1248 hours (average of 24 per week, which includes 52 hours for paid lunch breaks of 20 minutes per day) with a salary of £14,352.00. The working hours for this role are primarily Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, 09:30-17:30.

With an annualised contract the amount of hours you work each month may vary, however your salary will be paid in 12 equal instalments over the year. The amount of hours you work each week will depend on operational demand and time of the year.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Ensuring the cleanliness across the attraction
  • Vacuuming, spot checking and shampooing carpets
  • Ensuring toilet facilities are always adequately clean, including replenishing essential items
  • Sweeping and mopping floors and cells as required
  • Supporting the cleanliness of interactive spaces
  • Dusting, disinfecting and polishing surfaces, bars, desks and tables
  • Cleaning communal staff areas and staff offices
  • Managing the stock and storage of cleaning items
  • Removing waste from site, including emptying bins and litter picking
  • Supporting with laundry services
  • Cleaning education and corporate spaces
  • Reporting any cleanliness/health and safety/repair issues to line manager promptly
  • Any additional cleaning tasks required
